The Benedictine Abbey in Jerusalem in recent years often fell victim to vandals. It is believed that the perpetrators come from the movement of Jewish extremists carrying out similar attacks in retaliation for Palestinian attacks or pro-Palestinian protest – they say – government policy. The aim of the vandals were mosques, churches, and Jewish organizations calling for Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation.

Located on Mount Zion Basilica of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, built on the site of a Byzantine church, forms one piece of a Benedictine monastery. Land for construction of the church religious association gave the German Emperor Wilhelm II, who bought the land from the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
