Speaking to a crowd of his supporters kilkunastotysięcznego Cipras said that the new government will break with the policy of savings. “The Greeks write a new story. Our nation today has given us a decisive victory. We leave behind a policy of cuts and savings, the fear that accompanied us during the last years. We go forward with dignity and hope in Europe that is changing. SYRIZA and we – all Greeks – we are a symbol of a changing Europe “- said Cipras, whose words rally participants received with great enthusiasm.
He stressed that “Greece leaves behind a period of austerity and humiliation”. SYRIZY leader announced that his government would immediately begin negotiations with creditors Greece on “ new, fair, sustainable and mutually beneficial financial solution.”
“Our victory means that the troika, or creditors of Greece (European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission) are doomed,” – said Cipras.
The leader SYRIZY assured that the new Greek government, which will create, will be ready for a fair and equal footing with partners in Europe. “May we together can develop a win-win solution that will put an end to the policy of cuts, but will make the European economies return to growth in Europe that are filled with new social justice and true democracy” – said Cipras.
According to the official results of the vote given the conversion of 80 percent. vote, SYRIZA won approx. 36 percent. votes and the ruling so far, along with the Socialists, the conservative New Democracy 28 percent. Third place went to the extreme right-wing Golden Jutrzenka, which gained 6.4 percent. votes.
However, it is still unclear whether SYRIZA win even though the minimum majority of 151 seats in the 300-seat parliament, which allowed her to self-governance.
The Greek Ministry of the Interior published a projection, which shows that SYRIZA could gain approx. 150 seats. The margin of error is approx. 2 seats. If SYRIZA does not secure a majority of at least 151 votes, will have to look for a coalition partner or enter into an informal agreement with another party which will enable it to form a government of a minority.
If early elections will not lead to the formation of a new government, it will mean the need for their revision and subsequent paralysis of the Greek political system.
The radical austerity reforms espoused by Samaras and his New Democracy under the aid program of the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, were very unpopular. The Cipras promised that after the elections will end the policy of austerity and will seek to renegotiate unfavorable – in his opinion – an agreement with the EU granted aid to Greece, aiming to save the indebted economy.
Greece’s debt is 321.7 billion, of which 240 billion is a financial aid to Athens in the years 2010-14 to rescue the Greek economy from bankruptcy. The current EU aid program under which Greece should receive even 1.8 billion, expires at the end of February. To Athens can receive these funds, it is necessary agreement with negotiators from the Troika (European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission). It could not be achieved in December, as the Greek government agreed not to introduce further savings.
In Sunday’s elections, 22 groups competed. The right to vote was 9.8 million Greek citizens. 3-percent electoral threshold exceeds probably 7-8 party. Final election results are expected Monday.
