Alexander Lambsdorff, Vice-President of the European Parliament, accused Poland and the UK national egoism to tackle the problem of refugees in the European Union. He proposed an informal agreement within a smaller group of countries.
In an interview with German radio station Deutschlandfunk Lambsdorff said Thursday that Italy, Greece and Malta – countries in which resides a very large number of refugees, assistance should be provided “in the spirit of European solidarity.”
To enforce the new immigration policy and a more equitable distribution of refugees between EU countries is needed qualified the majority (in the Council) – said Lambsdorff. “If, however, Poland, England and other big EU states oppose indeed, a matter complicated a qualified majority” – he explained the German FDP politician.
In his opinion, it is not yet known what position it will take Spain, while France was “skeptical, but not totally rejects EC proposal”. “However, if the European Council fails, it comes to the situation we have seen for years in the EP, namely that in case of problems that require action from Europe, not all crashes of the European Commission or the European Parliament but by selfishness member states” – said Lambsdorff.
According to him, if proposed by the EC regulations not take place, then – to help Italy and Greece – the group of countries ready to accept refugees should agree among themselves “informal amount”.
