According to the weekly magazine “Der Spiegel” Russia is not planning a new offensive in the Donbas. During the recent US-Russia talks there was no question of Crimea.
For many years a correspondent for “Spiegel” in Moscow Christian Neef in the material in the latest edition of the weekly draws attention to the recent statements of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, which refers to the preparation of the Kremlin’s offensive against the Ukraine. The author notes that the pretext for the “bellicose statements” Poroshenko was the arrest of two Russian special forces soldiers, captured by government forces in the east of the country.
“The fact that the Russian leadership sends fighters to Ukraine and lies (denial), has long been known,” – says the “Spiegel”. But this does not – according to Neef – speaking of Russian “offensive”. According to a German journalist, on the contrary – “Moscow makes concessions”.
In support of this thesis cites Neef say the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov, who said that the areas controlled by separatists to remain a part of Ukraine and the need to promote Poroshenko. “Der Spiegel” adds that Russia officially said goodbye to the project “New Russia”, which is associated with “economic collapse” of Russia. “Why Kremlin would invest in Ukraine more blood and money?” – Asks Neef.
“War rhetoric” is, however – according to “Der Spiegel” – in the interest of Poroshenko. “The country is facing bankruptcy, and foreign debt grew to $ 40 billion (…)” – says Neef. In this situation the “war tune” is desirable – not only to foster patriotic feelings, but also to warn the West (in front of rapprochement with Russia).
“Der Spiegel” notes that Washington resumed dialogue with Moscow, as it is interested in cooperation with Russia on Syria. Americans are also present its proposal for the Eastern Ukraine. During the recent visit of US Secretary of State John Kerry in Moscow fell not once did the word “Crimea” – says the “Spiegel”.
