Ambassador of Ukraine: Chernobyl memento – Republic

“Rudy forest – not far from the abandoned city of Pripyat. This is the area through which the radioactive cloud passed April 26, 1986 – the first day of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The trees that grow here, suddenly died. But now in the wilderness releasing the basis of young willow and birch. Grass grow under his feet, in heaven can hear the birds singing … “.

The memories Yevhen Soloniny, a journalist of Radio Liberty

So now looks aptly described by a journalist the area in Europe covered with the strongest wave of radioactivity. April 26th, 1986 there was the largest nuclear disaster in the history of nuclear power. the disaster at Chernobyl is a tragedy not only of Ukraine, but also around the world. Two explosions in a nuclear reactor of the fourth block energy within 100 km north of Kiev resulted in radioactive fallout, as a result of which affected almost the whole of Europe.

It’s been 30 years. According to official data, in Ukraine today about 2 million people has the status of a person injured as a result of the Chernobyl disaster . Over 35,000 families are covered by social cover, which is associated with the loss of a breadwinner as a result of his death caused by the Chernobyl disaster. Almost 4 million Ukrainians were affected by radioactive radiation. The numbers speak for themselves, but can not describe the scale of the tragedy and human suffering. That is why the year 2016 has been declared by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko year of honoring the heroes struggling with the consequences of the Chernobyl accident and a year of remembrance of victims of the disaster technogenic.

There’s no denying that the consequences of the disaster are still being felt. Our duty is to bring as soon as possible to reduce the impact of the disaster and to create a safe environmental zone near the plant. Handle such a big challenge during the Russian aggression is not an easy task for the Ukrainian state. In addition, we realize that the armed aggression of the Russian Federation in the east of Ukraine may lead to another ecological disaster in the heart of Europe. Impact and scale of possible losses may be comparable with the effects of the explosion at Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
