The European Parliament has a negative opinion on the candidacy of the Law and Justice MEP Janusz Wojciechowski Member of the European Court of Auditors.
In a secret ballot, which took place on Wednesday, Janusz Wojciechowski supported 288 MEPs, 358 were against and 48 abstained.
Thus, the European Parliament confirmed the March opinion of his committee. Budgetary Control, who also spoke negatively about the candidacy of Law and Justice MEP on the EU’s auditor.
As claimed by the source in the EP, during the committee hearing EuropeanParliament Wojciechowski failed to dispel doubts committee regarding his political independence after a possible appointment to the post.
The term of office of six members of the European Court of Auditors (ECA) will expire on 6 May. Law and Justice MEP has been reported to be reserved for Polish place by the current government in Warsaw.
The final decision on the appointment of members of the ECA will take the Council of the European Union, namely the governments of the Member States.
They do not necessarily take into account the opinion EuropeanParliament on individual candidates, because Polish government to withdraw the candidacy of Janusz Wojciechowski.
What was the reason for the negative opinion?
Commenting on Wednesday’s vote, MEP PiS Jadwiga Wisniewska assessed that the lack of support of the European Parliament for Wojciechowski, the former president of the Supreme Chamber of Control It was dictated by political considerations.
– At the meeting of the Committee on Budgetary Control no one questioned the outstanding achievements, experience and competence Janusz Wojciechowski – pointed.
In her opinion, both adopted on Wednesday, the resolution of the crisis surrounding the Constitutional Court in Poland and negative opinion on Wojciechowski is the “only and exclusively the result of political opposition total”, which is the PO.
On the other hand, the Civic Platform believes that Wojciechowski failed to convince the majority of the EP that would be politically independent as a member of the European Court of Auditors.
– First of all, independence and impartiality, objectivity – these are the conditions which must comply with the judge ECA. In this area, Janusz Wojciechowski not convinced neither budgetary control committee, nor the whole of the European Parliament – said Rose Thun with PO.
In her opinion, the government should withdraw his candidacy and to propose a person who will fulfill all the criteria.
MEP Greens Igor Soltes from Slovenia, who was rapporteur of the EP on the candidates to the ECA also stated that Janusz Wojciechowski “is indeed professional competence” to be an auditor of the EU, but “there are serious concerns about its political independence, have not been dispelled during his hearing in the committee on budgetary control. ”
– There is also a clear conflict of interest due to his current role, in which, as Vice-President of the EP’s Committee. Agriculture was responsible for deciding on budgets, which would oversee the ECA – Soltes said. – It’s meant that Parliament had no choice but to oppose his candidacy – he added.
Soltes appealed to Janusz Wojciechowski to withdraw his candidacy, and the Polish government – to propose an independent candidate with relevant experience.
