When Sunday at. 17 closed polling stations of the first partial results indicated that won Libertarians. But not a hair, and with hair. Hofer advantage over Van der Bell was barely 0.6 percentage points. Later, his quotations were falling. After 40 minutes, the lead slipped out Van der Bellen from 50.1 percent. votes. Hofer had 49.9 percent ...

Both candidates have so far 50 per cent., While Van der Bellen has approx. 3 thousand. vote advantage. The statistical error is estimated at 1.8 percent.

- I'd be surprised if today we'd get a clear election results - commented one of the experts in the studio of public television ORF. Austrian Interior Ministry reported and that Hofer received 51.9 percent of votes, and Van der Bellen 48.1 percent. The Ministry has reserved the preliminary results do not include votes cast by correspondence (approx. 10 per cent. Of all votes cast).

In recent Austrian history of this election night was not yet. But this is not the only reason why this vote can be regarded as exceptional.

They are like fire and water

the second round has not entered any representative of the party of the mainstream - nor Christian Democrats nor social democracy, which with short breaks ruled the country together for the past 70 years. Austrians upset the burning of the two parties, their awkwardness in combating the effects of the global crisis (unemployment rate exceeded 10 percent.) And horrified dimensions of the crisis of migration (in the country was approx. 100 thousand. Refugees) set their red cards.

On the battlefield were Van der Bellen, founder of the Green Party, and Hofer from the Freedom Party (FPÖ). The first is a 72-year-old professor of economics. The second is a 45-year-old, who before moving to politics briefly worked as a technician in the airline.

Candidates and their parties are like fire and water. The Greens want to take in immigrants, including Muslim countries; Libertarians, like other far-right parties in Europe, they want to close the border in front of strangers, and Muslims consider a threat. Greens want a stronger European Union, Libertarians Hoferowi coined the slogan "Austria first". They want also to society based on "traditional" values. Greens to disagree.

Divided country

This is how different the candidates you could see during their debates. The private television ATV Van der Bellen and Hofer discussed without the participation of the moderator. The debate turned into a sharp clash full of harassment below the waist and invective.

The Austrians were scandalized by this. The press wrote that the candidates behaved as if they were in kindergarten.

It's no wonder that their electoral loss deeply divided country. There were even fights. For example, two weeks ago in one of the pubs in Salzburg drunk supporter Van der Bellen beat supporter Hofer and three police officers trying to arrest him. On the walls appeared the slogan "Heil Hofer", reminding that once the FPÖ worked many unsettled Nazis, and the party until recently wanted to lift the ban promotion of Nazi ideology.

Four days ago, the auxiliary bishop of Salzburg Andreas Laun announced that those who will not stand in the elections Hofer, have "brainwashed". Previously, the Church does not meddle in such a way to politics. The election did not cause too of such emotions.

The mobilization before the second round

A month ago, when the announced results the first round, it seemed that Hofer has victory in his pocket. He got 36 percent. votes, Van der Bellen - only 21 percent. That before the second round of the society so mobilized against the extreme right, is unbelievable. Libertarians for a long time worked to change its image, presenting itself as a moderate party, which wants to ensure the safety of the Austrians, order and prosperity. Apparently now they prevailed memories of a time when the FPÖ współrządziła country. When, in 2000. Entered the government as a coalition partner of the Christian Democrats, the EU imposed on Austria diplomatic sanctions.

Most of the voters Van der Bellen claimed that although he does not mean the end of the problems of ordinary people, is independent of the party and well It will represent the country to the outside. Hofer in the polls gathered directly opposite opinions.

- I'm interested in how voices are counted - upset on television ORF Heinz-Christian Strache, head of the Freedom Party. Some commentators took this as a harbinger of challenging election results.

According to opinion polls, if today elected parliament, the FPÖ would get at a third voice, the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats - barely a fifth. Elections will take place only in 2018. Van der Bellen said that if the president will not commit to policies Freedom Party - despite the election results - became head of government. The Constitution gives him the right to do so.

I think, however, Van der Bellen. I believe in the sense of the Austrians.
Hofer has a whole series of statements that indicate that they are very close to his nationalist ideas, and even a Nazi.
But tomorrow will be the result.
