Left-wing politicians and trade unions organized marches in several cities on the occasion of Labor Day today. The biggest demonstration took place in the capital.
streets of Warsaw in a march organized by the SLD and OPZZ more than a few hundred people. The route led before the seat of OPZZ the Sejm. The main procession password concerned the dignity of work, European values, democracy, the rule of law and tolerance. At the beginning of the march spoke the leader of OPZZ Jan Guz, who said that despite the promises of successive governments Polish workers are still exploited and maltreated by their employers. He called postulate OPZZ to retirement entitle their seniority – 35 years for women and 40 years for men. Speech in a similar vein gave Vladimir Czarzasty. The leader of the Democratic Left Alliance asked President Andrzej Duda on its promises regarding, inter alia, lowering the retirement age. Also criticized Law and Justice.
In Poznan Labour front of the Monument to the Heroes of June ’56 was celebrated activists of “Solidarity”, All-Poland Alliance of Trade Unions and politicians of the Democratic Left Alliance and the Labour Union. Wreaths filed separately, they said, but with similar problems of working people. Among the issues that require rapid improvement mentioned: domination of junk contracts, lack of job stability and the still too low average wages. Left-wing politicians also went to Leading the Kórnik. There, laid flowers at the monument of Marcin Kasprzak, an activist of the labor movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, for his activity was hanged.
In Lublin, members and supporters of left-wing organizations laid flowers on the grave of Father Peter Ściegiennego. He was known for his fight for social justice. For his work, he was sentenced to death at the last minute his sentence was commuted to flogging and exile.
In Lomza celebration of May 1 celebrated with a small group of people associated with the left. Held a meeting there in front of City Hall in the Old Market.
Day celebrated on May 1st commemorates workers strike in Chicago from 1886 demanding the introduction of 8-hour working day and higher wages. The protest ended in clashes with police. Many organizers of the demonstration were executed or sentenced to many years in prison. Labour established the founding congress of the Second International, sitting in 1889 in Paris.
