The number of abortions in the world increased from 50 million per year in 1990-1994 to 56 million per year in 2010-2014.

According to the researchers over the past 15 years in many rich countries it was fewer abortions, while in the poorer regions of the world, their number remained at a constant level. The number of deleted pregnancies in developed countries fell from 25 to 14 per 1,000 women of reproductive age.

The increase in abortion observed in developing countries, which is partly due to population growth and the desire to have smaller families.

Scientists say that the indicators on abortion are similar in different countries, regardless of whether they are carried out legally or not. In their view, laws prohibiting abortion does not limit the number of such procedures, and may cause the women decide to illegal abortion, which can be dangerous.

WHO and the Guttmacher Institute pointed out that in Latin America every third pregnancy ends in abortion, which is the result of higher than in other regions of the world.

There has also been a slight increase in western European countries, which - as suggested by the experts - may be associated with an increase in female migration from other parts of the world, including Eastern Europe. It is possible that some women do not know about available medicines and contraceptives measures and services, or coming from countries where abortion rates are generally higher - explain the experts.

Dr Bela Ganatra WHO says that "the high rate of abortion in our study provides further evidence that the need to improve and increase access to effective contraceptive services." "Investing in modern contraceptive methods would be far less costly for women and society than keeping unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions to make" - assessed.
