the first in the twentieth century genocide

The nature and scale of the crime remains the subject of dispute. Historians generally take the view that the massacre of Christian Armenians was the first act of genocide in the twentieth century.

The Turkish side question not only the term genocide, but also the number of victims, claiming that it is skewed. He admits only that in the battles between the Turks and the Armenians were many casualties on the side of the Armenians, but says the victims of civil war and unrest.

The German government avoid friction with the Turkish authorities, fearing a negative impact on EU-Turkey agreement, which is, according to Berlin, the key to resolving the crisis of migration. The German Foreign Ministry was initially opposed using the term genocide in the resolution. Both Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier did not participate in the vote because of other obligations.
