Chizhov, the decisions of those leaders who did not accept invitations to anniversary celebrations in Moscow, “are not a matter of political importance.” Participating in the ceremony confirmed more than 20 heads of state and government, and many take part in the national celebrations – he added.

– I think it does not indicate that someone wants to send a political signal. If someone wants to send a signal, then I think it is not very suitable occasion – said the ambassador. He stressed that “it is not a warning” on his part, but only a reminder that there are festive occasions, which should not be politicized.

Chizhov also stressed that the victory in 1945. Initiated the construction of a new European order and global and modern international law. – This is an opportunity to remind and to pay tribute to the anti-Hitler coalition, which was a good example of alliance and partnership between very different countries, countries with totally different ideologies and economic and social order – said the ambassador. – Where then was the possibility of such cooperation and such an alliance, why not now, when World War II and the Cold War behind us? – He added.

Stepan Bandera a “Nazi collaborator”

– Perhaps the time again benefit from the lessons of World War II – said the diplomat, adding that the impression that no conclusions but learning from these lessons. They testify to the fact – in his opinion – attempts to equate Nazism and Stalinism or glorifying “Nazi collaborators who become heroes”. As an example of such proceedings give the form of Stepan Bandera, who – like rating – is “a national hero” in Ukraine.

Bandera was a leader of one faction of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, the OUN, whose military arm, the UPA, was responsible for carried out since the spring of 1943 ethnic cleansing against the Polish population in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia.

– I would expect from the EU, which is so proud of its “soft power” to make it harder rather than softer in this particular case – Chizhov said.

In his opinion, the Russian perception of Joseph Stalin is “more objective than it was before.” – Of course, some consider him a hero, and many others as a dictator, which was probably, in my personal opinion – said Chizhov. He stressed that the assessment of this form can not conceal the heroism of the people and the army during the war.
