The vote was attended by over 2 million Catalans from more than 5 million eligible, even though it was non-binding and, according to the Spanish government – violated the law. It was supposed to be a symbolic vote support for the long-term campaign for the independence of Catalonia rich, inhabited by 7.5 million people.
Initially, Catalonia planned referendum on independence. When it was canceled at the request of the Spanish government, Catalan politicians decided to carry out an alternative consultation in the form of a symbolic vote, but this form and challenged the Constitutional Court in Madrid, which suspended the right of the Catalan authorities to organize a plebiscite.
