Greece has not paid the IMF. Expired international program … – Polish Radio

“I confirm that we received from Greece’s repayment in the amount of approx. 1.5 billion euros,” – said in a statement published on the night of the International Monetary Fund spokesman Gerry Rice. He announced that Greece will be able to get another loan from the IMF only when its arrears have been settled.

Rice also confirmed Tuesday that Greece has asked for an extension to repay its debt. He added that the Fund’s Executive Council, which represents 188 member countries will convene and decide on the matter “in due course”.

The fact that Greece has asked the International Monetary Fund to defer the repayments due until November until Tuesday midnight installment, reported earlier in the Greek state television ERT Greek Deputy Prime Minister Yannis Dragasakis.

Greece became the first country with a developed economy, which is in arrears with payments to the IMF. The country, whose economy since 2009 has shrunk by more than 25 per cent., Joined Zimbabwe, Sudan and Somalia, which also have debts to the IMF.

The unpaid installment of EUR 1.5 billion is the largest in arrear Fund’s history and represents insolvency of Greece in relation to that established in Washington institution.

The Fund will soon await another struggle with Greece. This year, for cash IMF Athens should jointly pay 5.4 billion from amounting to 21 billion euros of debt. The maturity date of the next installment of 284 million euros is 1 August.

Expired international aid program for Greece

After the failure of weekend negotiations with creditors to Greece on Tuesday Expired second international bailout program for Greece. Without access to funds from institutions such as the IMF, the European Union and the European Central Bank, which since 2010 flowed to Athens, Greece may rely on emergency funding from the ECB for its banks.

Since 2010, Greece in through two programs of assistance received from the EU and IMF nearly 240 billion euros. With these measures, the country could pay off their debt, but because of reforms imposed by the creditors introduced a number of savings and cuts that citizens felt the painful effects.

On Friday, Greece rejected the final proposal of the agreement with international lenders, which would unlock the last installment of the scheme in the amount of 7.2 billion euros.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Cipras announced on 5 July referendum on the conditions for support and at the same time appealed to the citizens to vote “no”. European leaders urge to vote “yes”, warning that the rejection of the proposals will be understood as an attempt to Greece’s exit from the euro zone.

The referendum is canceled?

On Tuesday, during the evening teleconference of euro zone finance ministers did not agree to the extension of the aid program nor to reduce Greek debt.

On Wednesday morning, the Eurogroup will discuss new proposals that Athens has to send that day. The institutions will consider a request from Greece for a new program until after the referendum.

According to Reuters, the Greek finance minister Janis Warufakis during a conversation with their EU counterparts appeal suggested a referendum if an agreement on a new aid program.

The Greek authorities are trying to to start a new one – two year – a program of support, but he also would have entrenched conditions. According to the head of the Eurogroup Jeroen Dijsselbloema may be even stricter than those that have been discussed so far.

– The problems of the Greek economy and banks only intensified, which may require even more stringent rules – Dijsselbloem said in an interview with CNN.

The IMF confirmed: Greece has not paid. Country on the verge of bankruptcy – On 24

The International Monetary Fund has confirmed shortly after midnight that Greece has failed to repay 1.5 billion euros installment debt. The country was cut off from funding and is formally insolvent.

Information gave Gerry Rice, the IMF’s director of communications. “I can confirm that the 1.5 billion euros that Greece had until now pass to the International Monetary Fund were not affected. We informed our Executive Committee that Greece is now up and can receive further funding from the IMF only after settlement of them” – says the statement.

“I can also confirm that the IMF has received a request of the Greek authorities for an extension of the payment period that has passed today,” – said Rice.

Do not have extended help

Europe has not agreed to reduce Greece’s debt or extend the assistance program. For this reason, until midnight Greece failed to repay on time its obligations to the IMF. However, Eurogroup will meet again on Wednesday to discuss the latest proposal from the Greeks.

The fact that an aid program for the Greeks was not extended, announced on Twitter as one of the first Finnish Finance Minister Alexander Stubb. Without the agreement the Greeks have not received the last tranche of aid amounting to 7.2 billion euros and consequently not paid off until the end of June installment debt, which awaits the International Monetary Fund. This 1.5 billion. Formally Greece thus became insolvent.

The last hope?

On Tuesday afternoon, the Greeks came out with a new proposal. They want to launch a new aid program for two years and restructuring of the group. But it is unclear how this initiative will react European leaders.

“The Greek government has proposed today a two-year agreement with the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), to meet the full financial needs of the country and parallel restructuring of debt” – says the a statement which gave the Greek government.

The statement also provided that Greece “remained at the negotiating table”, and Athens will continue to seek solutions that will allow to remain in the eurozone. We do not know what might be the answer lenders of Greece.

However, the Eurogroup will meet again – on Wednesday – and will discuss the new proposal.

closed banks

By the decision of the weekend the Greek government banks in the country will remain closed Monday for a week, the sixth of July. In addition, the card in the possession of the Greeks will be subject to limitation – one day you will be able to pay up to 60 euros. Cardholders foreign tourists and therefore, the limits will not apply.

The government’s decision

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Cipras on Sunday announced the closure of banks. In addition, was introduced capital controls.

Apart from banks also closed the Athens Stock Exchange. According to the government closure of banks is a response to actions by the Community. The European Central Bank decided to financially support Greek banks at the current level and did not consider getting worse shape banks. In turn, the government has not reached over the weekend an agreement with creditors ws. Aid program.

July 5 will hold a referendum on the reform proposals presented by the creditors. Many EU politicians considered this step for unilateral breach of the negotiations on. Expiring June 30 program. The Union did not agree to an extension because of the referendum.

The unprecedented act

With the decision not to renew the program for the referendum was not resigned to Cipras. – This is an unprecedented act, which raises the question whether sovereign nations can decide on their rights – said Sunday in a televised message, the Prime Minister of Greece. He added that for the closure of European banks are responsible stewards. He appealed for calm.

Read also: European Commission adopts the “last attempt” on Greece, EU treaties describe the procedure starting Member State of the EU but not in the euro zone. Moreover, determination of the conversion rate of the national currency to the euro is in them described as “irrevocable”. It used to be the basis for – usually politically motivated – the interpretation that the euro zone can not leave, and in any case this is not possible without simultaneously leaving the EU. However, if necessary, the lawyers will find a way to Grexit at Athens staying in the Union.

The banking crisis igniter Grexitu

The euro is the currency throughout the Union and only the United Kingdom and Denmark are treaties and permanently exempted from its adoption (negotiated it, by joining the EU). While other countries outside Euroland (including Poland) use temporary exemption from the obligation to resign from the national currency, because – this is the official reason – “does not yet satisfy the criteria of” belonging to the euro zone.

Grexit in the EU law probably mean a shift of Athens to the same group, because “no longer meets the criteria”. Although the current provisions in the EU law probably not be so stretch, but – with political will – preparing for example. Intergovernmental protocol on top of the Union, which would allow such an interpretation, it would be very quick.

Under EU law, Greece it is impossible to “throw” from the euro area against the will of Athens. But now run the scenario – if not halted at the last minute – will lead to a situation when Greece itself decides to abandon the common European currency. To Grexitu most and the fastest will be pushed banking crisis.

Greek banks without drip from the ECB

How will it look like? Deprived of help eurozone Greece will most likely not pay the installment today for the International Monetary Fund (approx. 1.5 billion euros), followed by 10 and 17 July will have huge problems with the service the debt in short-term securities (including approx. 3 billion) and 20 July will not afford to repay its debt to the European Central Bank (approx. 3.5 billion euros).

This means that the ECB in the most pessimistic scenario, tomorrow, and in the least pessimistic scenario until July 21 should recognize Greek Banks too daunting solvent, packed with government bonds because of an insolvent Greece. And that means an automatic cut off their short-term loans from the ECB.

For now, the ECB Governing Council froze on Sunday the top and almost exhausted the limit of these loans (89 billion euros). It was enough to shut down banks in Greece for a week, because I would not have money for customers wishing to withdraw contributions.

Greek banks without drip from the ECB will require recapitalization, and Athens will not have the money. Even more urgent the need to be payments to budżetówki, retirees or for public sector services. The immediate solution that many experts now recognize as the most likely replacement will be printing currency – eg. Mortgage bonds or coupons, in which wages would receive, among others, teachers. One of the reasons alternative currency issue, but political, technical impossibility would be a rapid transition to the euro for the drachma.

Greek coins FT-how bitcoins

The current finance minister Janis Warufakis – even as a scientist prior to entering the government – theorized about currency substitution as a “FT-coins” (FT stands for “future taxes”, “future taxes”). Its value for the holder would guarantee the release of a certain amount of future taxes (eg. In two years). Warufakis posted on Trading “FT-coins” managed like bitcoins. But ordinary coupons (“as the government on his feet, for the coupon you will get 10 euros”) are a whole lot more probable than the old ideas Warufakisa.

Greece could even by a few or even several weeks with dual currency function – officially euros, but every day with currency substitute. Some experts even claim that Greece could so pull into the autumn. But eventually – according to the law of Copernicus – better money (including the euro) will always be superseded by money worse. For example, it is difficult to imagine the recapitalization of banks coupons, while deposits would have to pay in euros. For this you need to przenominowania assets and liabilities to a single currency – the drachma.

The Greeks may ask for a coin

The Minister Warufakis threatens today that it will block before the EU tribunal in Luxembourg trying to push Greece out of the euro zone. Let us remember that even on Sunday afternoon preached that the introduction of restrictions on capital flows is contrary to the concept of monetary union (that’s right, but the precedent was Cyprus in 2013.), And in the evening the same day he recommended such restrictions Alexis Tsipras government. I introduced them.

And the most important – a scenario crawling, but rapid Grexitu faced by Athens, means that probably it will ask the Greeks themselves to legalize the drachma in the EU. In order to save the banks, to gain the right to own monetary policy and have the money to pay, among others, pensions.

Greece collapses. It’s the end of the European Union as we know it – Dziennik.pl

Grexit is not an option – assured yesterday the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker . But then he added that “Europe has received a mighty blow, and the goodwill was thrown to the wind”. – Games populist took advantage over the rest – commented.

According to unofficial information yesterday Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras asked for an extension of the financial assistance for his country. In a telephone conversation with Juncker argued that the Greeks can not be deprived of the right to a plebiscite scheduled for Saturday.

What is certain is that throughout this extended from five years of history are themselves losers. The Greeks, tired of five years of painful austerity radical choosing Syriza , hoped to help ease austerity policies. Instead, they have closed banks, restrictions on access to their own money and a real prospect that kept their savings in euros will soon be converted to quickly depreciates the new coin . The effect will be that coming out slowly from recession economy falls deeper into it.

The losers are also EU Hellas creditors. And it’s not even about almost 215 billion that Greece is now the euro zone guilty in exchange for two bailouty and help European Central Bank . It is not that if the schedule repayment of debts by Greece is written out to the year 2045, this loss will go unnoticed in practice.

The most important, however, is that since Greece started slow disintegration of the European Union in its current form. Center led by Germany will start with the building of Europe around its banking and fiscal union. With its own budget and its own institutions. The periphery will operate in the organization of marginal political significance. Because Grexit is a return to the idea of creating a hard core Union, composed of healthy economies in the euro zone.

EU leaders over the past five years repeated that a Greek exit from the euro zone may be the beginning of its disintegration. Today, this self-fulfilling promise begins to materialize.

The euro area without Greece will survive because it is better prepared for the crisis than it was in 2010 or 2012. There is no lack even the votes that ultimately comes out of her is good, because getting rid of the weakest link – and in fact the only non-matching from the beginning – regain credibility and will be able to more closely integrate among themselves.

Even if Grexit zbilansuje economically, politically would be the end of the integration project in the shape carried out for years. If you will rely on the output not only in the euro zone, but in general from the European Union – will end up in that crucial to our security will gain a foothold region Russia or China. Maybe Eurozone will be economically more credible without Greece. Reliable will not be the Union.

Thousands of Greeks gathered in the central square of Athens – Syntagma to protest against austerity imposed by the west. “We want to tell Europe to stop killing people. You can not indefinitely reduce wages and raise taxes. Not survive,” – says our reporter, one of the protesters. These types of demonstrations are to be repeated at least until Sunday, when it is provided for a referendum on. The conditions of the assistance provided by international lenders.

In an interview with Greek television dismissed fears that voting ‘no’ will exit of Greece from the monetary union.

He stressed that the stronger voice rejection of the reform agreement for your help, the stronger negotiating position of Greece in any discussions that may take place.

Chairman KE: I would like the Greeks voted for the ‘yes’

To vote for ‘yes’ in the referendum, in turn, encouraged the Greeks, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. I would like the Greeks voted for ‘yes’, regardless of what types of question will respond.

Juncker at the conference pointed out that the final content of the questions is not yet known. In his opinion, vote for the “yes” mean that the Greeks are in favor of the euro area and the EU. Please Greeks to vote for ‘yes’, because of this referendum will flow positive signal to other euro area countries. If the Greeks say yes, it will flow from this message for the EU and beyond that Greece wants to stay together with other countries in the euro zone and the European Union – he said. You should not commit suicide, if you are afraid of death. (…) The voice on it ‘(…) would mean that Greece has said’ no ‘to Europe – he stressed. Time for the Greeks, that took the floor and began to shape your own destiny – for this generation, but, more importantly, for future generations – said.
