Marches on the occasion of birth anniversary of Stepan Bandera in Ukraine – Polish Radio

Approximately one and a half thousand supporters of the nationalist party Freedom and Right Sector took part in a march organized in Kiev. The demonstrators gathered in front of the monument to Taras Shevchenko, and then passed through the center of Kiev on the Maidan Independence. Stepan Bandera was the leader of one of the factions of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), whose armed wing, the UPA, is responsible for the run of the spring of 1943 ethnic cleansing against the Polish population in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. As an activist, then leader of the Ukrainian nationalist movement in interwar Poland, Bandera was an organizer of terrorist actions against the Polish state and the Soviet Union, including attacks in 1933 on the Soviet consulate in Lviv, and in 1934 to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Poland Bronisław Pieracki II.

In 2010, Stepan Bandera awarded the posthumous title of Hero of Ukraine. He gave it to him a special decree of the outgoing President Viktor Yushchenko. The decree was finally quashed by the court. The granting of the title of Hero of Ukraine Bandera provoked opposition in Russia and Poland.
