The Verkhovna Rada (parliament) of Ukraine adopted a law that recognizes the legal status of participants in the struggle for the independence of the country in the twentieth century, including members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). “The State recognizes that the freedom fighters in the twentieth century, played a major role in the revival of Ukrainian statehood, proclaimed 24 August 1991,” – says the adopted Law.

The UPA fought in World War II against both Germany and the Soviet Union. The Verkhovna Rada has set May 8th Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation in honor of the victims of the Second World War. It was decided that May 9 will continue to be the Day of Victory over the Nazis in World War II.
