As announced on Tuesday the head of the EuropeanParliament, the leaders of the political groups Parliament also decided that awards ceremony in November attended by representatives of the Ukrainian Euromajdanu who were also nominated for the Sakharov Prize. EP has also sent a delegation to Azerbaijan, which will meet the third-nominated awards, campaigner for human rights Lejla Yunus.
– We want to stress that the decision to differentiate Dr. Mukwege was not a decision against honoring the other candidates (…), and that their support – said Schulz.
Ukrainian Euromajdan – that is, participants pro-European demonstrations in Kiev and other cities, who in the autumn of last year, took to the streets in protest against the decision of the then President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych to postpone the signing of an association agreement with the EU – was nominated for the Sakharov Prize at the initiative of Polish MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski. For the nomination received Euromajdanu journalist and blogger Mustafa Lease, who first urged Ukrainians to protest singer Ruslana Łyżyczko activist student movement Jełyzaweta Szczepetylnykowa and journalist Tetiana Chornovil, which in December 2013, she was heavily beaten after the publication of photos of luxury villa Yanukovych.
In turn, Lejla Yunus, director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy in Baku, for years criticized the ruling Azerbaijan representatives Aliev family’s abuse of power, falsification of elections, suppression of freedom of speech, police brutality and harassment of opposition. In July, has been arrested on suspicion of treason, espionage and tax evasion. Her candidacy for the award submitted, inter alia, Greens.
Schulz also stressed that the European parliament is concerned about a possible liquidation of Memorial, a Russian non-governmental organization that defends human rights and documenting Stalin’s crimes. A request for termination of the Memorial occurred Ministry of Justice of Russia. Memorial was awarded the Sakharov Prize in 2009. – Memorial fighting for the legacy of the man whose name is called our reward – Andrei Sakharov – said Schulz. On Thursday, the EP has to deal with the resolution in this case.
Sakharov Prize is awarded by the EP for achievements in fight for human rights and democracy. In previous years, the winners were: Malala Yousafzai teenage Pakistani, fighting for the rights of children and women’s right to education in Islamic countries, members of the Arab Spring, the former president of South Africa and the fight against apartheid leader Nelson Mandela, leader of the Belarusian opposition movement “For Freedom” Milinkevich and former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
This year’s awards ceremony will be held on 26 November in Strasbourg.
