60 arrested after greeting St. Nicholas – Interia

60 people were arrested in the Dutch city of Gouda during the traditional ceremony of welcome St. Nicholas. Clashed with each other supporters and opponents of Zwarte Piet form or Black Peter, who is the assistant of a bearded saint.

Children in the Netherlands love Black Peter, because it’s funny, though not brainy elf who helps Santa Claus handing out gifts. Among adults Zwarte Piet, however, raises some time a lot of emotion. Opponents of this form believe that it is a remnant of the colonial era. Politicians, journalists, and ordinary citizens ongoing fierce debate on Zwarte Piet. Some cities even abstained from organizing a traditional welcoming ceremony of the Holy, who comes to every Dutch city of steamboat from Spain.

During the ceremony welcoming the Holy Gouda, which was attended by several thousand people with children, opponents of Black Peter developed a banner that read “Zwarte Piet is racism.” Proponents of this form, who in solidarity with arousing controversy hero had painted their faces in black tried to break up the banner. Despite the appeal of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, so as not to spoil the fun for the children, there was fighting in front of kids.
