16.05. Boston (PAP) – A jury in federal court in Boston on Friday condemned to the death penalty Dzhokhar Carnajewa for the participation in the bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15 in 2013, in which three people were killed and over 260 were injured.
The jury announced its verdict after 14 hours of deliberations. Carnajew was sentenced to capital punishment – death, including based on allegations of participating in a conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction.
The verdict was taken unanimously by the 12 members of the bench. Otherwise, Carnajew automatically been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Under federal law the death penalty decision requires unanimity of the whole composition of the bench.
In a statement released after the reading of the verdict, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said that Carnajew “cold-blooded made a terrorist attack” and ordered capital punishment is “appropriate punishment for this horrific crime.”
The death penalty for 21-year-old accused demanded by the prosecutor. Formally, the sentence must still announce a judge. It is expected that defense lawyers are to appeal and can take several years before it reaches the execution of the judgment.
April 8, the same jury, which on Friday Carnajewa sentenced to death, found him guilty of the murder of three people and wounding 264 by detonating 15 April 2013 two bombs at the finish line of the marathon in Boston. Also found him guilty of shooting a police officer in three days later. Carnajewa was then guilty of all 30 charges against him; for 17 of them he threatened him with the death penalty.
Carnajewa process was one of the most closely following the United States. The jury heard 150 witnesses, including victims of assassination. According to the defense Dzhokhar did not work for ideological reasons, but he was manipulated by an older and far more radicalized brother Tamerlane.
Meanwhile, the prosecutor presented him as an accomplice assassination in cold blood who planted the bomb as a group of children, killing 8-year-old boy. According to the prosecution Carnajew took aim at innocent people, because he wanted to terrorize the US on a day when the world’s eyes were on Boston and held in the marathon. He collaborated with his brother in order to carry out a “coordinated attack in order to maximize terror.”
As reported on the media, Carnajew during the whole process behaved calmly, for which he thanked Judge George O’Toole. On Friday, ruling listened with bowed head and folded hands.
