The Attorney General does not have to be a lawyer. “Disgrace!” – TVN24

Photo: rada.gov.ua Ukraine’s parliament adopted a law that allows to take the functions of the Attorney General by a person without legal training. This opens the way to a post by Yuri Lutsenko, the head of the parliamentary faction of the Bloc Petro Poroshenko.

The law, which two days earlier failed to win the required majority of votes, 258 deputies supported now. According to it a candidate for Attorney General does not have to be a lawyer, but should have higher education and work experience in the institutions of justice or law enforcement.

6 May President of the Parliament Andriy Parubiy announced in the media that President Poroshenko is considering only one candidate for the position of the prosecutor – just Lutsenko. He said that the candidacy is currently “the most optimal for this position,” and he supports it.



Resignation Szokina

On Tuesday, former Prime Minister and President Batkiwszczyny Yulia Tymoshenko and the leader of the Radical Party Oleh Laszko reported that they do not support changes to the law, for extending functions of the Attorney General by the candidate without legal education and close to the president. In their opinion, the law was created specifically under the candidacy of Lutsenko.

At the end of March, parliament accepted the resignation of Viktor Szokina from the post of Attorney General. Enjoying a previously trusted the president Szokin has long been criticized for sluggishness in investigating the perpetrators of the tragic events at the turn of 2013 and 2014 year at the Independence Square in Kiev, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people.
