The European Commission on Wednesday to propose the abolition of June visas for Turkish citizens traveling to the EU. This decision is part of the Brussels agreement with Ankara concerning the inhibition of migration wave.
According to the March agreement, the Turkish authorities to take back all migrants who illegally enter Europe via the Aegean Sea. Turkey has not yet fulfilled all 72 criteria necessary for visa, but because Brussels needs to Ankara, will today the green light for visa-free travel. “In recent weeks and days, Turkey has made significant effort to meet these criteria,” – said a spokeswoman for the European Commission Mina Andreeva.
Brussels refutes criticism of double standards, turning a blind eye to corruption and human rights violations in Turkey. The Commission shall ensure that at any moment a visa free regime could be suspended if it turns out that Ankara does not fulfill its promises and will comply with all EU conditions.
The Commission’s proposal for the abolition of visas for Turkish citizens must still be approved by member states and the European Parliament, which – as expected – is to take place in late June.
