Klimkin admits that eastern Ukraine is under the control of the separatists. But he says these regions are Ukrainian and will be recovered. Klimkin sharply criticized Sunday’s elections in the Donbas. He says the vote was rigged and illegal.
According to the Ukrainian Minister of the European Union should toughen sanctions in response to Russia. Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini puts into question the effectiveness of sanctions.
In an interview with the “Sueddeutsche Zeitung” Mogherini says that the Russian economy and Russian authorities feel the sanctions, but it remains an open question whether Moscow will change therefore its policy. Mogherini however, wants to maintain the sanctions. As he says, would mitigate, the crisis in Ukraine was resolved, and it is not.
