French warship participating in the EU operation patrolling the Mediterranean Sea on Saturday rescued 217 migrants from three boats located off the coast of Libya – have informed the maritime authorities in Toulon, southern France.
Immigrants and arrested two alleged people smugglers were handed over to the authorities of Italy.
Patrol Unit Commandant Birot started in the past week its participation in Operation Triton, consisting in patrolling the Mediterranean and fighting traffickers, gangs which control most of all coast of Libya.
Italian coastguard said on Saturday that this morning coordinated the rescue of at least six boats with immigrants. Other operations were continuing into the evening and it was not known how many people were saved; informed only that the day was very busy.
1 November 2014 EU launched an operation patrolling the Mediterranean which coordinates the EU’s Frontex agency. It involves 18 countries and there are two observation aircraft, five patrol ships, two patrol boats and a helicopter. Monthly budget for operations is 2.9 million. Since the start of operations carried out 130 interventions, they rescued more than 15 thousand. people and arrested 57 smugglers.
The recent disaster boat in the Strait of Sicily, which killed perhaps a few hundred people, was considered a turning point that must lead to a change in policy EU to dealing with illegal immigrants.
