– This is a political decision on sanctions and agreement on their extension – EU diplomat told PAP.

The formal decision on the extension of sanctions against Russia will take ministers Foreign meeting in Luxembourg on June 22.

Introduced in last year’s economic sanctions against Russia for involvement in the conflict in Ukraine were due to expire at the end of July. Their maintenance therefore require a unanimous decision by the Member States.

The reason for violation of the truce

Already at the March EU Summit He tied the validity of economic sanctions against Russia with the full implementation of the agreement on the ceasefire agreed in February in Minsk. Agreed in Minsk calendar of implementation arrangements assumes, however, that full implementation of this agreement will last until December of that year.

Diplomats indicated that an agreement with Minsk is violated. At the beginning of June in Marjince outside Donetsk saw the first months of serious clashes between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian troops. Therefore, there is no reason to consider leniency.

In the summer of last year the EU introduced economic sanctions against Russia for supporting separatists on the eastern Ukraine. These include restrictions on access to capital for Russian state-owned banks and oil companies, restrictions on the sale of advanced technologies for the oil industry, dual use equipment and arms embargo. These restrictions were introduced on the year.

Because of the crisis in Ukraine and the annexation of the Crimea by Russia, the EU also imposed a visa and financial sanctions on 151 individuals, among whom are Russian politicians and military, as well as 37 companies and organizations. In September, the EU will have to decide whether to remain and these sanctions.
