Thousands of Greeks gathered in the central square of Athens – Syntagma to protest against austerity imposed by the west. “We want to tell Europe to stop killing people. You can not indefinitely reduce wages and raise taxes. Not survive,” – says our reporter, one of the protesters. These types of demonstrations are to be repeated at least until Sunday, when it is provided for a referendum on. The conditions of the assistance provided by international lenders.
The aid package would be aimed at preventing the bankruptcy of Athens in exchange for reform, tax increases and further painful cuts in the state budget . Greeks gathered in the square emphasize, however, that the vote in Sunday’s referendum “no”. The same calls on the Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Cipras. In an interview with Greek television dismissed fears that voting ‘no’ will exit of Greece from the monetary union.
I do not think that their (international creditors) plan relies on ejection of Greece from the euro zone – said the Greek Prime Minister. He stressed that the stronger voice rejection of the reform agreement for your help, the stronger negotiating position of Greece in any discussions that may take place.
Chairman KE: I would like the Greeks voted for the ‘yes’
To vote for ‘yes’ in the referendum, in turn, encouraged the Greeks, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. I would like the Greeks voted for ‘yes’, regardless of what types of question will respond.
Juncker at the conference pointed out that the final content of the questions is not yet known. In his opinion, vote for the “yes” mean that the Greeks are in favor of the euro area and the EU. Please Greeks to vote for ‘yes’, because of this referendum will flow positive signal to other euro area countries. If the Greeks say yes, it will flow from this message for the EU and beyond that Greece wants to stay together with other countries in the euro zone and the European Union – he said. You should not commit suicide, if you are afraid of death. (…) The voice on it ‘(…) would mean that Greece has said’ no ‘to Europe – he stressed. Time for the Greeks, that took the floor and began to shape your own destiny – for this generation, but, more importantly, for future generations – said.
Authorities: IMF will not pay the next installment of debt
On Monday, there was information that Greece did not pay the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the next installment of debt of € 1.6 billion. The term of this payment goes to the end of June.
As noted by Reuters, confirming that Athens did not pay participation testifies to the depth of the financial crisis faced by Greece.
Greek ministers have said several times before that the government will not have the funds to pay off installment debt to the IMF if no agreement is reached with the creditors and Greece would not get the next tranche of financial aid. After the negotiations with Greece’s international creditors broke down last weekend, it has become a formality that Athens will not be able to pay installments – says Reuters.
The agency adds that the lack of payment przybliżyłby Greece to exit the euro zone if the European Central Bank (ECB) to support Greek banks stopped funding emergency. However, the ECB will maintain these loans at least this week – adds Reuters.
