The G7 countries are ready to tighten sanctions against Russia – Polish Radio

Western policy towards Russia in connection with the crisis in Ukraine, is one of the main themes of the meeting in Germany.


 

Chancellor Merkel stressed that the conflict in Ukraine can be solved only by political means, based on peace agreements with Minsk. The abolition of sanctions against Russia is, according to Chancellor associated with the implementation of these agreements. Merkel stressed that the G7 countries are ready to tighten sanctions if necessary “if the situation so requires.” The head of the German government stipulated that it “does not want this,” and assured that “we will do everything to move forward with the Minsk process.”


 

Merkel also that G7 countries will promote economic reform and the fight against corruption in Ukraine. The ambassadors of seven countries in Kiev create “a support group,” which will watch over the implementation of cooperation.


 

Merkel stressed that the G7 is a “community” confessing common values ​​- freedom, democracy, international law and respect for the territorial integrity of all countries.


 

Signed in February Minsk peace agreements provide for, among others, ceasefire in the east of Ukraine between the forces and pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists, the withdrawal of heavy weapons and demarcation of the buffer zone with a width of 50 to 70 km. In the Donbas but still clashes between the warring parties from using heavy weapons. The Ukrainian authorities accuse Russia of supporting the separatists.

G7 not only for Ukraine
