The coup took place in the district which is the scene of fighting between forces loyal to the government that reside in the east of Libya and not recognized by the international community and the alliance of Islamist groups. Responsibility for the attack admitted in a statement coalition militia Islamic Shura Council of Revolutionaries in Benghazi.
Benghazi is mired in the chaos of when the local commander Khalifa Haftar declared war Shura Council two years ago. His forces recently made some progress but did not regain total control of the city.
From March Tripoli operates a national unity government recognized by the international community. Earlier in the country were two competing centers of power. With political chaos and military in Libya used by jihadist groups linked to the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda of the Islamic Maghreb, the strongest in North Africa terrorist organization.
Haftorah forces are allied with the government, which in 2014 was located in eastern Libya; not yet decided on a national unity government.
