The new defense doctrine of the Russian Federation emphasizes the need to protect the interests of Russia in the Arctic region. Therefore, Russia is planning in 2015. “increase combat capabilities of the armed forces” in the region, but also in the Crimea and in the Kaliningrad region, – said the head of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov, quoted by RIA-Novosti news agency.
– In 2015, the main efforts of the Ministry of Defence will fall to increase the combat capabilities of the armed forces (…). Special attention will be given to factions in the Crimea, in the Kaliningrad region and the Arctic – Gerasimov said.
Russia must protect its interests
The new defense doctrine of the Russian Federation, signed in December by President Vladimir Putin, stresses the need to protect the interests of Russia in the Arctic region. The doctrine also mentions NATO enlargement of the external factors that threaten Russia.
Russia has already promised to strengthen their hand in the Arctic, which was to take place by the end of 2014. From 1 December last year, began to function in the Arctic strategic command, which actually is a new – fifth – French military circle. Active Russian military activity in the Arctic is from 2012.
The creation of the military district in the Arctic is associated with the treatments Russia to extend its borders in the Arctic area.
