According to the Norwegian shipowner GEARBULK, the ship sailed with a cargo of bauxite from Malaysia to China. Within 155 miles of the sea (approx. 287 km) off the coast of Vietnam, the crew sent a Mayday signal, which received the Japanese Coast Guard.
The ship sank off the coast of the island of Vung Tau, distant 59 nautical miles (96 km) from the biggest city in the south of Vietnam Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).
