23.03. Singapore (PAP / Reuters, AP) – Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s state-founder and first prime minister of the city-state, died on Monday in the morning (local time) at the age of 91 years. In Singapore, announced a seven-day mourning and flags lowered to half-mast.
Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong, the son of the deceased, gave a televised speech to the nation. Speaking of Malay, Chinese and English stressed that Lee Kuan Yew gave Singapurczykom proud sense of national identity.
The words of deep regret for the death of Lee Kuan Yew gave UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Condolences to the family of the deceased by, among others, US President Barack Obama.
Singapore declared independence in 1965, starting with the Federation of Malaysia and became a republic. Lee Kuan Yew held the office of prime minister since 1959 (when Singapore gained self-government as a British colony inside) until 1990. In 2004, the head of government stood by his son.
Lee Kuan Yew in Singapore enjoyed great respect. It is widely believed that it was his merit is to transform this former British colony in the thriving financial center and one of the richest countries in the world in terms of income per capita.
The People’s Action Party, which he co-founded, continuously exercise independent authority in Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew was known among the ruthless and effective fight against corruption. He stressed that paying high salaries of ministers and officials at lower levels is the best way to avoid bribery.
He was, however, also criticized – accused of limiting the freedom of the media and the ruthless treatment of political opponents. Refuted these allegations, arguing that restrictions on freedom of expression and public protests are needed to maintain the stability of a multi-ethnic and multi-religious in Singapore.
Ban Ki-moon expressed deep regret at the death of Lee Kuan Yew, and stressed that the creator of this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of independence of modern Singapore “will be remembered as one of the most influential leaders of the Asian”.
Barack Obama Lee Kuan Yew called “a true giant of history” – said the White House. The President stressed that connects to the Singapurczykami in mourning and that “Lee will be remembered by future generations as the father of modern Singapore and one of the greatest strategists in Asian affairs.”
