Aviation Iraq and coalition under the leadership of the United States on Thursday jointly conducted extensive raids in Tikrit palace complex, a city controlled for more than three weeks by the jihadists of the Islamic State.

Wednesday, coalition aircraft carried out the first air strikes against targets Islamic State (IS) in the hometown of Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi forces in support of fighting in the area at the side of the Iran-backed Shiite militias.

The spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Defence, speaking in air base in Baghdad, said the Iraqi Air Force and coalition forces conducted raids on the palace complex, “which serves as headquarters commanders IS.”

Commentators note that the decision to support aircraft in Tikrit puts campaign led US coalition fighting in an awkward position on the same side as the militia supported by Iran.
