The conservative party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud won the early parliamentary elections in Israel, obtaining 29 seats in the 120-member Knesset – said on Wednesday, the morning newspaper “Jerusalem Post” and the web portal Ynet.
Election Likud result is better than expected, giving the 65-year-old Netanyahu serious chances for a fourth term as head of government. The Prime Minister is, however, in the face of tough coalition negotiations.
Both Netanyahu and Herzog rejected for now the possibility of creating a “grand coalition” of their parties – which is a supporter of the President of Israel Reuven Riwlin. “I am convinced that only unity government can prevent the rapid decay of Israeli democracy and new elections,” – he said the newspaper “Haaretz”, commenting on the first results of the vote.
According to the “Jerusalem Post”, the third strongest faction in the Knesset will create a lot of Arab alliance of 14 seats.
