The tremors were recorded at a depth of 65 km at a distance of 54 kilometers from the nearest town, 20-thousand Kokopo, on the island of New Britain, and almost 800 kilometers from the capital, Port Moresby.
aftershocks in the same area was estimated at 5.7 on the Richter scale.
The tsunami warning center in the Pacific announced that “the possibility of serious tsunami off the coast within a thousand kilometers around the epicenter. ” Tsunami threat is restricted to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.
Locally there may be up to 1-3 meters waves – clarified.
