• The Dutch strongly spoken out against the EU’s association agreement with Ukraine
– I would like to remind everyone that the real aim of the organizers of the referendum is not an association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union. This is an attack on the unity of Europe, an attack on European values - Poroshenko said in his speech, recorded during his visit to Japan.
The President thanked all those who supported the referendum in Ukraine and previously popularized it in the Netherlands. – At the same time, I would like to emphasize that, under the Constitution, the Netherlands, the referendum is only consultative. Now the voice should take the government, parliament and Dutch politics – he stressed.
The head of state expressed confidence that the referendum will not become an obstacle on the trail of Ukraine to Europe. – I declare with all responsibility that Ukraine will continue the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU and ensure the further development of a free trade zone with the EU, because it is a way to modernize the Ukrainian state and to strengthen its independence – stressed Poroshenko.
He assured that Ukraine will not deviate from the road to European integration. – Ukraine, like freedom, can not be stopped – he finished his speech.
Accompanying the President in Japan, Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin said that the results of the referendum will have no impact on the practical application of the Association Agreement EU-Ukraine. – Nothing changes, the contract is valid as before, yet on a temporary basis, so both the agreement on free trade zone and cooperation in various other areas will have continued – he said.
Klimkin estimated that the referendum results are a problem for the authorities of the Netherlands, which must reflect on their further actions. – Of course, the results of the vote show the Dutch attitude to Europe, the pursuit of Eurosceptics to breach its unity and mobilization just this camp was strongly felt – said the head of the Ukrainian diplomacy.
The reaction of Russia
Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev assessed that the results of the referendum in the Netherlands on the Association Agreement EU-Ukraine are an indicator of the Europeans against the Ukrainian political system. Companies such content Medvedev posted on Twitter.
This is the first official comment representative of the Russian authorities on the results of the referendum, in which the Dutch were against the EU-Ukraine agreement.
The government “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” emphasizes Thursday that “the majority of the Dutch doubts whether Ukraine’s integration with the EU will benefit the Netherlands and throughout Europe.” Journal writes about the “swamp of corruption” in Ukraine and added that the Dutch worried about the prospect of forfeited money in it Dutch taxpayers.
It is estimated also that the position expressed by the parliaments of EU countries that “in most cases virtually unanimously” approved the agreement, “proved to be a far cry from the mood of Europeans themselves.”
“Moskovsky Komsomolets” published on Thursday, a report from The Hague devoted to the referendum. Correspondent log describing the information campaign on Ukraine in the Dutch media estimates: “The Dutch are not stupid and have upset their push for their compassion and growing aggression against Russia.”
“FT”: outcome of the referendum in the Netherlands warning to the EU
The result of the referendum, in which the Dutch were against the association agreement EU-Ukraine should be treated not only as a “no” for a rapprochement with Kiev, but also as an expression of disapproval for the Union – writes commentator “Financial Times”.
Columnist Tony Barber London daily points out that the turnout in the referendum was 32 per cent., Which, as the conditions of the Dutch is the result of very weak. According to the commentator will remain in the home of many Dutch citizens was a conscious choice.
Barber believes that the outcome of the referendum shows the “degree of social dissatisfaction with the quality of democracy and accountability in the EU.” Columnist “FT” stresses that “dissatisfaction with the EU rooted in one of the six founding countries (the Community).” It indicates that similar sentiments are beginning to reign in France and Italy.
The commentator argues that on Wednesday the referendum should look also for the June vote in the UK. Barber believes that “the Dutch vote is a reminder to all who are looking for a UK referendum scheduled for June 23, in which citizens will be consulted about staying or leaving the EU.” In his opinion, the results in the Netherlands shows that “direct democracy is inherently unpredictable.”
“Just like many Dutch has not taken a decision (did not take part in the referendum – PAP) on the agreement between the EU and Ukraine, so you may find that many Britons go to the polls in June, commenting on the government David Cameron, or on many other issues, not just on the same British future in the EU “- emphasizes Barber forecasting that in contrast to the Netherlands’ attendance in Britain will certainly be much higher.”
Referring to the essence of the Dutch referendum Barber estimates that it illustrates the sentiment among Eurosceptics who oppose further enlargement of the Community. It also shows that the vote was closely watched by the Russian authorities. According to the commentator, “FT”, “the way the referendum described the state Russian media shows that the Kremlin hoped that the results (of voting) disparages the EU in the eyes of Ukrainians as an unreliable partner.” However, the low turnout meant that “Russia hopes remained largely unfulfilled,” – adds Barber.
Despite the non-binding nature of the vote Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte stated that he will not ignore the result and his government may reconsider the question of ratification of the association agreement the EU and Ukraine. He added that it will take time to determine what the decision will be taken. “FT” recalls, however, that in order for an association agreement with Ukraine stopped working, the need for a unanimous decision by all EU member states, not just the Netherlands.
