The ruling Reform Party won elections in Estonia – Baltic Review

Currently, the ruling Reform Party of Prime Minister Taaviego Rõivasa won Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Estonia. Riigikogu entered two new populist parties that affect the change of the shape of the coalition government.

The Reform Party received 27.7% of the vote won 30 of the 101 seats in the parliament. Result premiere party Rõivasa means the loss of three seats, compared with the prior ownership. Social Democratic Party, the former coalition partner, gained 15.2% and 15 seats (lost four).

The biggest opposition party, the pro-Russian and populist Centre Party received 24.8% of the vote and 27 seats (one more than in 2011, year). Soviet Union and Res Publica Homeland gained 13.7% and 14 seats (up to 9 seats lost).

The parliament also entered new populist parties – Free Party of Estonia and the Estonian Conservative People’s Party. They obtained 8 and 7 seats and the support at the level of 8.7% and 8.1% of the vote.

A good result and the entrance to the parliament of new parties resulted in a weakening of the PR, SDE, and the greatest IRL . The current bipartisan coalition of PR and SDE will not be able to be maintained due to lack of majority. The new government is likely to enter as free Party of Estonia.

The turnout in the elections was 64.2%. More than 176 thousand. (19.6%) of the eligible votes cast in electronic voting.
